08:00: You will be picked up from your central hotel in Can Tho by a friendly local guide, who will gladly share stories and insights about life in the Mekong Delta. From here, enjoy a comfortable drive of around 2–2.5 hours to Dong Thap Province, with a short stop along the way if needed.

Xeo Quyt Cajuput Forest

Arrive at Xeo Quyt Cajuput Forest, where the natural beauty and wartime history of the Mekong Delta come together. Once an important revolutionary base during the Vietnam War, this peaceful forest concealed meeting shelters, bunkers and secret pathways beneath its dense canopy.

Board a traditional sampan and glide quietly through narrow canals surrounded by cajuput trees, water plants and lush tropical greenery. Along the way, listen to birdsong and discover how the forest’s natural landscape helped protect the people who lived and worked here during the war. Depending on local conditions, you may also explore part of the historical site on foot.

After the visit, enjoy a Vietnamese lunch at a local restaurant. Vegetarian, vegan and other special dietary meals can be arranged upon request.

Continue to Sa Dec Flower Village, a charming horticultural village with a history spanning more than 300 years. Discover the local technique of growing flowers in elevated bamboo baskets, which allows farmers to care for the plants while the fields are flooded. Take a short sampan ride along the narrow waterways and admire colorful gardens filled with ornamental plants and seasonal blossoms. The village is especially vibrant before the Lunar New Year, when local families prepare thousands of flowers for markets across southern Vietnam.

Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House

Sa Dec is also famous for the romantic and poignant story of The Lover. In the late 1920s, the young French writer Marguerite Duras met Huynh Thuy Le, the son of a wealthy Chinese-Vietnamese family, while travelling on a ferry across the Mekong River. Despite their different cultures, social backgrounds and family expectations, they began a secret and passionate relationship. However, their love faced strong opposition, particularly from Huynh Thuy Le’s father, and they were eventually forced to separate when Marguerite returned to France.

Years later, Marguerite Duras transformed memories of this relationship into her celebrated novel The Lover, which was later adapted into a film. Visit the historic Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House, where he once lived, and admire its distinctive combination of Vietnamese, French and Chinese architecture. Afterwards, take a gentle walk through the nearby local market and visit an ancient temple to learn more about Sa Dec’s cultural heritage and experience the authentic rhythm of daily life in the Mekong Delta.
